Rwanda Makes History: Africa’s First Self-Flying Electric Air Taxis Take Off

Kigali, Rwanda

Africa has officially stepped into the future of transportation, and Rwanda is leading the way.

In a groundbreaking moment for aviation, Rwanda has become the first country on the continent to introduce self-flying electric air taxis, redefining urban mobility and positioning itself as a hub of next-generation innovation.

The announcement was made during the Aviation Africa 2025 Summit in Kigali, where the EHang EH216-S—a fully autonomous, electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft—took its first public demonstration flight.

A Giant Leap for Africa’s Urban Mobility

Imagine skipping traffic and soaring above the city without a pilot. That is no longer a dream in Rwanda.

The EH216-S can carry two passengers, reach speeds of up to 130 km/h (80 mph), and travel 30–35 km per trip—all while operating on 100% electric power.

Strategic Partnerships Powering the Project

This milestone comes through a collaboration between:

Rwanda’s Ministry of Infrastructure

China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC)

EHang Holdings Limited, a global leader in autonomous aviation

The partnership underscores Rwanda’s ambitious plan to transform Kigali into one of Africa’s most advanced smart cities.

Why Rwanda Is Betting Big on Air Taxis

Rwanda has consistently positioned itself as a pioneer in adopting future-focused technologies:

First in Africa to launch medical drone deliveries

Now first to test passenger-carrying autonomous aircraft

Investing heavily in green and sustainable transportation

According to Rwanda’s Minister of Infrastructure, Jimmy Gasore:

“This isn’t just a flight; it’s a statement. Rwanda is shaping the future of urban mobility, sustainability, and innovation across Africa.”
