Demi Lovato On Winning The Grammy And Her New Soulful Project

Demi Lovato

Since getting her start in the Disney universe and eventually leaving some of that world behind and striking out on her own, time has been very kind to Demi Lovato. The pop star has racked up five solo top ten albums and eleven top 40 hits. She has steadily grown from just another pretty face to one of the most talented vocalists working today, and the last era of her career established her as a creative and powerful force to be reckoned with, and the next seems like it will follow suit perfectly.

We recently spoke with Lovato about her upcoming album (which we should start hearing about very soon), her recent Grammy nomination, and the record label she founded with best friend Nick Jonas.

CEEK VR: You're about two years out from your last album, Confident. What are you working on musically

Demi Lovato: Working on a new album right now, and I'll be coming out with my first single after this very soon.

CEEK VR: Oh really? Do you know how this will be different from the last project?

Demi Lovato: Yeah, it'll be very different from the last project. The sound is more soulful. I think you'll just have to wait and see.

CEEK VR: Confident earned you a Grammy nomination, which I know you spoke a lot about wanting to achieve that. Do you think your career has now gone to the next level?

Demi Lovato: I think that once you get recognition from the Academy it's just… I don't know whether your career has taken a next level type of step, but for me I have more confidence in it and it feels really good to be recognized by the recording Academy.

CEEK VR: What are your hopes for the coming year and this upcoming project now that you've hit that milestone? What else do you want to achieve?

Demi Lovato: Well, like I said, I want to come out with my album. I'd love for that to be successful. But ultimately just coming out with it is a goal of mine. And that's what I'm focusing on right now.

CEEK VR: You’ll be releasing it in conjunction with your record label. How's the company going and what are your plans for it?

Demi Lovato: The company's going great. My plans for it? I would love to discover new artists. I worked on my album, Nick [Jonas] worked on his album under Safehouse, and now we have Chord Overstreet. Being able to find new artists would be really awesome.

CEEK VR: Do you find inspiration when you're hearing new talent or looking for new talent that you then take back into the studio with you?

Demi Lovato: I find inspiration everywhere, whether that's through new artists or through older artists that I've looked up to my whole life. It's something that I am just... I just find inspiration everywhere.

CEEK VR: You said the new album is more soulful, who were you inspired by for that?

Demi Lovato: Well, I've been inspired by Aretha Franklin my whole career. I grew up listening to Christina Aguilera. The soul in her voice is amazing. Also, singing to Kelly Clarkson. Those are artists that I've been inspired by.

CEEK VR: You say it's soulful, but over the past few months I've seen your name pop up on a number of electronic dance tracks. What has you interested in that world?

Demi Lovato: Well, I think what's cool about doing features is it's not your own music, so you can just lend your voice to other sounds and other songs. But I have kind of had fun doing songs with other people, dance songs that I wouldn't do on my own. It's been fun.
