During its existence, the Spice Girls pop band had sold over 80 million records worldwide. The group is considered to be the youth's idol of the 1990s. The girls managed to conquer the British as fast as the World Show Business.
The Spice Girls is one of the best-selling pop groups of all time. Moreover, it is the biggest British pop success since the Beatles. Despite the fact that the band hadn’t released new singles since 2008, the girls combined together in order to give concerts around the world. For your consideration, the band has performed on the CEEK stage with their biggest hits too. So you can get a lot of pleasure watching and listening to the Spice Girls' incredible singles in live performances. Anyway, let’s become more familiar with the band's fascinating history.
Back in 1994, the two producers, Bob and Chris Herbert, decided to create a new spectacular pop band of girls that would be like a big bang in the music industry of that time with an excess of boys rock bands. Also, they would like to bring new competitors to such popular male pop bands as “Take That” and “East 17”. So, the producers had announced a casting: they needed the beautiful and hard-working girls of 18-23 age with good vocal and choreography skills. Of course, the original line-up wasn’t formed for the first time. Around 400 girls presented themself in the best ways and furiously fought for a place in the sun, but the final line-up included Victoria Adams, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, and Emma Bunton. Bob and Chris titled the band “Touch”. But pretty soon, it’d become clear that the girls and the managers didn’t have the same vision of the band’s future. The members of "Touch" weren’t satisfied with the band’s repertoire and title. After several months of ongoing conflicts, the girls had finally terminated the contract with the producers.
In 1995, the girls signed a contract with the Virgin Records label in order to record their new album. As the group’s name "Touch" wasn’t their scene, the young talents decided to change it. Originally, they were thinking of the “Spice” name. Unfortunately, it was already taken. Since 1996, the band has become officially named as “Spice Girls''. By the way, every “spice” of the band is unique, and every girl has their own nickname. Therefore, the Spice Girls consists of:
Sporty Spice: Melanie Chisholm or Mel C
Posh Spice: Victoria Adams (now Victoria Beckham)
Ginger Spice: Geri Halliwell
Baby Spice: Emma Bunton
Scary Spice: Melanie Brown, or Mel B
Clearly, the nicknames are related to the girls’ characteristics. For example, Victoria Beckham is the Posh Spice because of her refinement, stylish, brunette bob haircut, and signature pout. Geri Halliwell also couldn’t be named any other way than Ginger Spice. The girl always stood out with unwavering vital energy, zest, flaming red hair, and sexually attractive. Sometimes, she was named as Sexy Spice. Baby Spice or Emma Bunton was the youngest group member, with long blond hair and had babydoll style dressing. Scary Spice or Mel B was so frank, also she talked loudly and with a Leeds accent, had a pierced tongue, and a bold manner of dress. As for Sporty Spice, it’s more simple. Mel C had real athletic abilities and sported a tough-girl attitude.
On 8 July 1996, the Spice Girls released their debut single “Wannabe”, and after a short while, the debut video with the same name. The single became a hit immediately, and the video was aired up to seventy times a week at its peak.
Any doubts, “Wannabe” had become a good ladder of success. The girls became recognizable among other famous artists, the number of interviews rapidly grew. The band’s first music press interview appeared in Music Week. Their incredible song “Wannabe” became a global hit. It reached number one in 37 countries and won the title of the biggest-selling single by an all-female group of all time.
Back in September of that year, the Spice Girls were pleased by the release of the debut studio album “Spice”. Words cannot describe how it was successful. In seven weeks, it sold 1.8 million copies of the album only in Britain. It became the biggest-selling album of all time in the UK by a female group.
The girls’ popularity had grown so much that their success drew comparisons to Beatlemania. That was a time of "Spice mania". In Europe, the album also became the biggest-selling album of 1997. Moreover, it got 8 Platinum certificates from the IFPI for sales in excess of 8 million copies.
On 1 November 1997, the Spice Girls released the second album “Spiceworld”. Compared to the first album, the success of this one was almost as good as the debut creation. At the same time, the girl band premiered its own movie “SpiceWorld” to fans. At the height of the fame, the group performed with their best singles at the birthday party of Prince Charles. That time, the popularity of the female collective had reached incredible proportions. And then further in, the Spice Girls released the new album “Forever”, it’s no less cool than the previous. Unfortunately, it’s their last album. Although “Forever” came to the various charts as one of the best, it lost to its two best-selling predecessors, selling five million copies.
In 1998, Ginger Spice unexpectedly left the band at the height of its popularity because she’d like to continue building on her musical career as a solo artist. In 2001, all members were already engaged in their own projects. In fact, it was the breakup of the Spice Girls. In 2007, the band announced a reunion and tour supporting their new album "Greatest Hits." In 2012, the band reunited one more time and performed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. In 2018, Brown, Bunton, Chisholm, and Halliwell announced their 2019 tour. Unfortunately, Posh Spice didn’t want to become the band’s member one more time. Currently, Spice Girls is planning to release a new song.
