Dylan Kwabena Mills, or better known as Dizzee Rascal, was born on September 18, 1984, in London, UK. As a child, Dylan had a problematic character.
His father died when Dylan was still young. After that, all the heavy burden fell entirely on his mother's shoulders. At school, this character was fully manifested, but his mother did not give up. She was constantly looking for new schools for little Dylan because she wanted her son to get an education.
Repeated school changes did not help much. He was expelled from four schools for inappropriate behavior. In an interview, Dylan himself admitted that the list of his "madness" included fights with teachers, robbery of a pizza delivery man, and even car theft. However, despite all this, the fifth school became a catalyst in his music career. In the fifth school, Dylan was expelled from almost all lessons. The only lesson that did not exclude him was music. Even a music teacher encouraged him to make music. And it worked. His first attempts to create music were on a school computer.
When he was about 14 years old, Dizzee became a novice DJ in the style of DrumAndBass. At the same time, he began to read rap and periodically appeared on pirate radio stations. He produced his first full-length single at 16, and in 2002 joined Roll Depp, a band made up mostly of his school friends. During Dizzeе's early career, he was assisted by his mentor Wiley.
In 2003, Dizzee released his first solo album - "Boy in da Corner", which hit the UK Top 40, and even reached position №23 there. This album helped him receive the prestigious Mercury Music Prize as the best album of 2003.
This award was perhaps more significant for him than for others, as he received it at the age of 19. Boy in da Corner was also recognized as the number one album by Planet Sound and one of the top 50 albums by Rolling Stone. The combination of unusual sound, tempo, and rap allowed to create something unique and left great opportunities for experimentation. After some time, Dizzeе collaborated with the English electronic duo Basement Jaxx. This collaboration was for the duo's third album, "Kish Kesh", or rather over the song "Lucky Star". This track was released in 2003 and hit the top 30.
This unusual style of performance and the music itself brought him an NME award for innovation. In the same year, his second album was released - "Showtime", which overshadowed the success of even the previous album and reached 8th place on the UK Album Chart. Almost every single release from this album gained popularity and allowed to take the game to a new level. This allowed Dizzee to make deals with brands and release his own shoes through collaboration with Nike.
Among his other albums, his fourth album, "Tongue n 'Cheek", which contained another batch of hits that sounded in many charts for a long time, cannot be ignored. The first of these hits was the song "Dance wiv Me", which became a viral club song. This song was the combination of dance rhythms, the artist's own style, and a small vocal collaboration with Calvin Harris. The song became so popular that for 4 weeks, it held number one on the UK charts.
The second hit is "Bonkers", which was made in collaboration with producer Armand Van Helden. Technically, this single is the first in this album. This song made it possible even more than others thought. Again the first place in the charts, and again a vast number of plays on various media. Even if you don't know the name of this song, when you hear it, the first thought that comes to your mind is "Oh, I know this song!".
The third song that again became number one in the charts, which for one album is an incredible result was "Holiday". As well as "Tongue n 'Cheek", this song was made in collaboration with Calvin Harris and returned to a more standard club genre. It may not be as aggressive or full of Rascal's unique bass line, but the light, cheerful motive and fun lyrics make it perfect for clubs.
Since then, he has released more than one album, and each of them has gained considerable, or at least some popularity. There were a lot of collaborations and own projects, and with each hit, you could see a slight change of style in the music, which always makes listeners wait for a new hit.
