Disclosure is an English duo performing electronic music. The musical ensemble of two brothers (Howard and Guy Lawrence) that were born in Reigate, Surrey, South East England.
The musicians came from a family of professional musicians and began to get involved in music at a very early age. So, Guy first tried to play drums at the age of three, and Howard started playing bass at eight, after which their parents insisted that both guys learned to play the piano. The youngest of the brothers, Howard, also began to dabble in vocal singing. The brothers went to Reigate College, where brothers were studying both music and music technology, and Guy even tried to perform in a college band that played indie rock. During this time, the guys formed their musical tastes. Howard was influenced by such musical styles as funk, soul, and maudlin singers, while Guy listened to classical music, hip hop, dubstep, and some electronic styles. So, during his studies in college, Guy plays his first dubstep gigs as a student, collaborating with some local hip-hop artists. He was mixing different music styles back those days but decided on house music as an ideal sound for himself. Later, he enlisted his younger brother in the creation of music.
The guys began work on recording their first tracks in winter 2010 in the house where their father lived and played gigs. They recorded music in the same room in which their father's band was preparing for performances. At first, the brothers tried to copy the music they had heard earlier in the house; however, after experimenting with sound for several weeks, the guys decided on their sound. They describe their music as electronic house music with a pop structure. At this time, the guys spread their first tracks on the popular social network MySpace, giving single performances as opening artists at events throughout England. The guys recorded their debut single named Offline Dexterity in the summer of 2010. They signed with the newly-formed little-known PMR label in early 2011, and in the summer of the same year, they released their second single "Carnival" / "I Love ... That You Know". The single attracted the huge attention of Sam Evitt and Jack Street's Method, with whom the guys have been working all the time. All this made it possible to start working on their first EP, which was released less than a month later.
The duo's first real success came in 2012 when the release of the "Tenderly" / "Flow" single took place on the national radio. This debut attracted significant interest in the EP, which was announced for release in the summer of that year. "The Face" consisted of both songs written by the brothers and remixes of popular pop-songs of that time. The remixes allowed them to reach high chart positions both in the UK and in some continental European countries, especially in the Netherlands.
The single "Latch," co-written with Jimmy Napes and Sam Smith, landed the brothers in the Top 20 UK Singles Chart. This year, Disclosure gained its first recognition, after which, next year, the musicians released two more singles that hit the top of the British charts. White Noise peaked at second place on the UK singles chart, subsequently forming a new EP called The Singles.
The release of the first full-length studio album allowed the band to hit the mainstream. So, Settle, released in 2013 almost immediately after the release, took first place in the UK album chart, bringing widespread publicity to the guys. The group receives commercial success as well as accolades from music critics in addition to the recognition. Besides being successful in Britain, the guys got high positions in many charts of European countries, South America, and Australia. The ensemble goes on a worldwide tour, performing in more than 40 countries, giving both solo concerts and performing in music festivals.
Immediately after finding success around the world after the release of the first album, the brothers began recording their second studio album, attracting several musicians in it. The list of them includes Gregory Porter, Kwabs, Brendan Reilly, Sam Smith, Lorde, Lion Babe, The Weeknd, Nao, Miguel, and Jordan Rakei. The album reached number two on the UK album chart just a week after its release. The album peaked at # 1 on both the UK and US electronic/dance album charts. Caracal, although it took high positions and was commercially successful, still did not repeat the success of the first studio album. Disclosure embarked on a tour to support the new album, after which, in 2017, the brothers announced a one-year hiatus. The musicians gave only two performances in a year. In 2018, the musicians returned to studio work. The musicians released two EPs in three years, ahead of the release of their studio album. The third and last album to date, Energy, was released in August 2020. As we can see, despite all the events of 2020, the duo does not plan to interrupt its activities. The guys have already announced new performances for the winter of 2021, which should help in promoting Energy.
